Marchesa Mermaid’s:
My Golden Globe post is done, but there was a special dress that I really wanted to give a little “separate love” to. I don’t actually draw this designer a lot, and I really should, as they seem to design dresses which fit seamlessly with my style of illustration. The brand in question is Marchesa, headed by design duo Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig

The reason this dress stood out to me was that it’s actually a runway garment. With Tilda and Haider, and Angelina and Versace, they were custom pieces, (However Angelina may pull a Gwyneth Paltrow/Emilio Pucci where she wore a dress on the red carpet at the 2011 Emmy’s days before it was presented in the Spring 2012 show, Versace Atelier’s first show in a long time is being resented at Paris Couture Week in 6 days time). This dress was worn by ‘Glee’ Actress, and Diva-In-The-Making, Lea Michele.

I can bypass the ‘Over-Posing’ that Michele seems to be sporting on the red-carpet and focus solely on the dress. It is so intricately detailed with feathers and beads, with a fully sequined skirt that just shimmers and slithers down the runway and red-carpet. Although the dress has been altered from runway, I do prefer Lea’s version without the hip embellishments, giving the skirt a sleeker and more ‘mermaid-esq’ feeling.

I also tried capturing the beautiful soft shapes the feathers create along the bodice and filtering down into the waist and hip area. The fine tulle creates the illusion of a bare chest, so its quite a risqué dress for Lea to choose, but she has worn a lot of Marchesa in the past and I applaud her, or whoever chose this dress as it really works.

I drew the dress as refined as possible. But using silver pen to make the illustration shine as much as the pewter colored dress does.

I really like this dress, and have ‘re-discovered’ a brand, which really fits my drawing style, so expect to see more of Georgia and Keren’s designs for Marchesa on my site.
