Riccardo Ticci has been at the helm of Givenchy for over half a decade now, and has really made his mark on the House. His particular aesthetic has always taken the dark and the light together and taken many twists on the traditional elements of fashion.
His latest Spring 2012 Couture show was a mixture of elaborate and quite shocking jewellery and a very strong Sportswear trend.
The first look takes influence from the common American Sport or “Varsity” Jacket. To take it to a couture level, this particular item is made from embellished Crocodile Skin. Ornate decoration such as Stars and baroque swirls wind up the sleeves and across the chest.
A fully sequinned panelled dress, constructed of black tubular beads create a sheet of enamel black material across the models frame. This dress was so difficult to draw as the “simple” dress does not have any detailed embroidery, however I wanted to get the impact of the individual beads.
The strong sportswear connection (apart from the shoot being set in a Gymnasium) , is conveyed in this Look. Ticci has a way of taking something so ordinary and “everyday” and incorporating it into the highest form of Design. The simple, White Tank-top.
Paired with a similar shape that was shown in the Spring 2012 RTW Collection, a chain detail skirt is draped over the models hips and cascades into thousands of tassels and intricate bead work. The idea of paring the incredibly simplistic and “Common” top with this amazing skirt is something a few designers can really pull off. And it works so well in Ticci’s collection.
I feel I should now explain the barrage of ornament my sketches seem to be sporting on their faces. To take the drama of the 10-piece show to the next level, Ticci decided to give each model a giant silver nose ring, and some, large, ethnic inspired earrings. I really have very little else to say about them apart from….I need a nosering….badly.
This Draped arms and a long, column style dress is riveted with studs and large crystal bullet points all the way down the centre. The beautiful cascading sleeve and halter-neck style top is so elegant and really adds some understated elegance to an otherwise harsh aesthetic.
The Final look is a pair of pants. These however are not just any pants. The extremely wide cut, embroidered Palazzo Pants fall and drape so beautiful around the models legs, and counterbalances the draped top, similar to the previous look.
Also sporting gigantic, menacing earrings and a lust-worthy nose-ring, this very relaxed look shoes how detailed and intricate the 10 looks shown really are. Fully embroidered and hand created, the craftsmanship is truly outstanding.
Ticci has followed a similar formula for his Couture shows for the past few seasons now, 10 looks, No runway and a large group shot at the end. So…here are all 10 looks, shot in a Gym, featuring huge names in the modelling world like Stella Tennant, Joan Smalls, Kristen McKenney, Natasha Poly and Saskia De Braw.
You have to admit, seen all together, its quite an ominous array of women, and it definitely makes a real impact.
